Cat Trapping

 Wandering Cats

  • Try speaking with your neighbour first. Many issues can be resolved this way.
  • If the problem continues, contact Council’s Local Laws/Animal Control Officer (5494 1200).
  • Provide details: number of cats, likely source, whether feral/stray/neighbour’s, and what discussions you’ve had with neighbours.
  • If a cat repeatedly enters your property, you may trap it (humanely) and must notify Council. Owners may be fined if their pet continues to trespass.

Trapping Cats

  • Only use humane traps (Council loans confinement traps free of charge for up to 7 days – replacement fees apply if lost/damaged).
  • Follow the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 – traps must not cause pain or suffering.
  • Council’s capacity is limited and varies seasonally.
  • If cat is determined ‘feral’ by Council staff it will be humanely euthanised.

Trapping Procedure

  • Collect traps from Council, 41 High St, Wedderburn (weekdays only).
  • Do not set traps on weekends or public holidays.
  • Place food in the trap for familiarity before setting.
  • Check traps at least every 24 hours; do not place in direct sunlight.
  • When a cat is caught:
    • Cover with a towel/blanket (leave ends open for airflow).
    • Provide clean water.
    • Call 5494 1200 to arrange drop-off at Council.

Other Points

  • You may use your own legal trap (not homemade or possum traps). Must liaise with Council first.
  • If a native animal is caught, release it immediately (or contact Wildlife Victoria if injured – 03 8400 7300).
