Rain and flooding may lead to an increase in mosquito numbers.
At home, drain any water left outdoors in open containers (such as flower pots, tyres or buckets.) Also change your pet’s drinking water regularly.
In Victoria, some mosquitoes carry diseases such as Ross River virus or Barmah Forest virus, which can be passed on through mosquito bites.
To avoid mosquito bites, wear long pants, socks and long-sleeved shirts, and apply insect repellent.
Mozzies breed in warm, stagnant water – thousands can breed in small quantities of water in just 5-7 days. They generally don’t move far from where they breed, so if mozzies are bad at your place, they are most probably breeding close-by.
