Pyramid Hill road naming takes the next step

The remarkable contribution of a respected local leader is set to be recognised through a proposal to officially name an unnamed road in Pyramid Hill.
Appleby Lane, running east from McKay Street to Buckley Street, was nominated by the Pyramid Hill and District Historical Society as a tribute to Albion Richard ‘Dick’ Appleby, a man whose legacy continues to be felt throughout the community.
Mr Appleby served as the long-time Manager of the Pyramid Hill Co-operative Society and played a pivotal role in strengthening the local economy.
Under his leadership, the Co-operative grew into an important community institution, supporting local businesses, farmers and residents.
His connection to the proposed road is particularly significant, with Co-operative properties adjoining the lane and his family home backing onto it.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr Appleby was widely recognised for his commitment to community service. He served as a Justice of the Peace, Councillor and President of the former Gordon Shire, while also contributing to numerous organisations and committees that helped shape the district’s future.
He was a life member of the Pyramid Hill Bush Nursing Hospital, a foundation member of both the Bowling Club and Senior Citizens Club, and an active supporter of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society, Historical Society, churches and community groups. His outstanding service was recognised through his appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1981.
Council undertook a comprehensive community consultation process earlier this year in relation to naming this section of road, inviting feedback from local residents, adjoining landholders and the wider community.
Nine submissions were received, with no objections lodged to the proposed name. Members of the Appleby family also provided their support, sharing family memories and historical records highlighting Mr Appleby’s lasting contribution to Pyramid Hill.
The proposed name will now be submitted to Geographic Names Victoria for formal registration.
