Demolition process begins for Pyramid Hill building
Published on 30 June 2025
The first steps have begun in the demolition of the former Maternal and Child Health building in Pyramid Hill.
Loddon Shire Council, which owns the building at 30 Kelly Street, resolved earlier this year to demolish the building to enable an extension of the adjacent open space.
The building has been surplus to Council’s operational requirements for several years and has been vacant since before 2020. The maternal and child health service will be provided for in conjunction with Northern District Community Health in the new Pyramid Hill Community Centre.
The development of the Pyramid Hill streetscape project provided an opportunity to consider if the building was surplus to Council requirements and if the space created by the removal of the building would enhance the overall amenity of the redeveloped streetscape.
Council was then approached with community proposals to use the building in 2021 and 2023, but neither of those projects came to fruition.
The building was deemed earlier this year to be in a state of disrepair that would require significant investment to return it to a compliant and useable state.
The redevelopment of the area surrounding the building through the recent streetscape project provided the opportunity to consider how the site could enhance the works recently completed.
That work has just begun, with removal of asbestos from the building in preparation for the demolition, scheduled to begin in late July or early August.
The demolition is scheduled to take about five days, with landscaping of the site to follow.
