Wedderburn in September is hosting the Trimax Victorian Sand Greens Championships.

A bevy of some of Victoria’s top amateur golfers will gather in Wedderburn in September to test their skill at this year’s Trimax Victorian Sand Greens Championships.

The women’s event will run on Wednesday and Thursday, 6-7 September, with the men to follow on the Saturday and Sunday.

The championships are organised by Golf Victoria, but the Wedderburn club will prepare the course and provide volunteers to assist on playing days.

First conducted for men in 1972 – and women three years later – the championship is played over 36 holes of stroke play.

Anyone can enter, but female contestants require a Golf Australia handicap at an affiliated club not exceeding 36.4 and, for the men, 27.4.

As the name indicates, competition takes place on a course with sand greens and is rotated between country districts on a yearly basis.

Wedderburn Golf Club, in Racecourse Rd, is a well-treed sand scrape course open during the winter season from around April to October.

Throughout Australia, there are about 400 courses that have greens comprised of oiled sand or some other similar material, usually due to the prohibitive cost of maintaining grass greens by small clubs in rural areas.

Competitors come from around Victoria to test their skills in the event, with last year’s championships at Bannockburn attracting 94 women and 94 men.

Many stay overnight in the town, but, with the annual Wedderburn Vintage Machinery Rally running that same weekend, visitor accommodation is booked solid.

Some will need to commute from other centres such as Inglewood and Bridgewater.

Fees for the event are $75 (for paper entries) or $60 (online through the Golf Victoria website).  These payments provide a light lunch both days, but the optional tournament dinner on the Saturday night will cost an extra $25 per person.

There is also the opportunity of joining a 4BBB on Friday, 8 September, for $20 a pair (men or mixed).

Championship entries close on Friday 25 August. For more details, phone golf club secretary Gillian Millie on (03) 5494 3090 or the Loddon Visitor Information Centre on (03) 5494 3489 or visit
