| Kool Skools Launch Singing the praises of Loddon’s youth took on new meaning last week with the launch of a CD featuring some of our most talented teen musicians. Be Our Guest is a compilation of 13 mostly original songs by students from Pyramid Hill, Wedderburn and Boort Colleges recorded as part of the Kool Skools program. The title of the album was inspired by the old bluestone guesthouse where the young artists stayed while working in the recording studios in Melbourne. Dare to be Different, the first song on the album, seemed a very fitting anthem to kick off the evening of musical celebration at Wedderburn Town Hall. Putting yourselves out in public is difficult for anyone, but these young students passion for and commitment to music carried them through the big performance debut and interviews with ABC radio. The enthusiasm and gusto with which the young performers took to the stage was matched by the audience of peers and proud parents. The live show was followed by a Freeza disco which attracted more than 200 students from across Loddon and Buloke Shires. The evening was a great warm up for the big ticket event in Boort on November 14. More than 500 young people are expected to attend the regional final of the Battle of The Bands with student musicians from across the region lining up to try and blow away the competition. Loddon’s hopes will be pinned on Boort’s own Georgia Fisher.
Battle of the Bulge Putting the best foot forward in the fight against diabetes, Loddon Shire councillors and staff are currently locked in their own Battle of the Bulge. We are just three weeks into the Shining Light corporate fitness challenge, but the rivalry is intense between five teams drawn from the council’s executive, corporate services, operations, the Serpentine office and the kindergartens. There have been unconfirmed reports of cakes being dispatched from the Serpentine office to Wedderburn and sightings of staff never before been seen moving faster than snails pace, jogging. Will my own team The Heavies overtake the Kinder Krusaders? Who will take top prize for strength and endurance? For the answer to these and many other questions stay tuned.
Dingee Date It’s time for a free snag and chin wag at Dingee. An East Loddon communities meeting will be held at Dingee Hall on Friday October 30 from 7pm to 9.30pm. Whether you want to catch up with your neighbour or sound out local agencies about available services this is the chance. Representatives from the DPI, Centrelink, CFA, Loddon Shire and Goulburn Murray Water will be on hand along with rural financial counsellors to field any questions. The Salvation Army Multimedia Bus will help keep the kids occupied while you mingle.
On with the show As the last of a kind in Loddon Shire, the Boort Show is truly a blue ribbon event. It is a credit to the Boort Agricultural Society and a testimony to resilience of rural people that the annual agricultural expo has prevailed through some extremely hard years. This year people turned out in force to enjoy a revamped events and exhibitions program ensuring that after 123 proud years, the show will go on.
Clean and clear With the grass knee-deep after recent rains and fire season nearly upon us now is the time to start clearing your blocks. Next week council officers will begin inspections in the Boort-Pyramid Hill area to ensure all residential properties are fire safe. Residents have already been sent courtesy letters reminding them to remove fire hazards and slash grass and undergrowth to a height of 75mm. After the devastating events of last summer people should hardly need prompting to reduce the fuel-load around their homes. To find out how you can best be prepared for the season ahead attend one of the CFA’s summer fire safety meetings. The first meeting will be held at Korong Vale at 7.30pm on October 27 followed by a 1pm meeting at Rheola on October 31. This will be followed by meetings at: Wedderburn Mechanics Hall, November 2 at 7pm; Inglewood Town Hall, November 4 at 7.30pm; Laanecoorie Public Hall November 9 at 7.30pm; Tarnagulla Fire Station November 12 at 7pm; Bridgewater Public Hall, November 17 at 7.30pm; Dingee Memorial Hall, November 25 at 7.30pm; Newbridge Public Hall, December 10 at 7.30pm and Serpentine Memorial Hall December 14 at 7.30pm
Community Plan Meetings Council is now more than half way through its community plan meetings schedule. These meetings are a good opportunity to evaluate achievements and work out priorities for the next five to ten years.
