Livestock on roads
Livestock production is an important part of the economy in Loddon Shire.
Local Law No 5 - Livestock Local Law - Amendment No. 3 - 2005 applies when moving stock on or across any public access roadway:
- all livestock movement across the road or along the road must be supervised and be under effective control at all times
- signs conforming to VicRoads guidelines need to be in place during movement of the livestock and removed directly after
- livestock are only to be moved across or along the roadway during daylight hours
- any livestock deposits on any road or pavement which causes or is likely to cause a hazard to other road users must be removed as soon as practicable.
Reporting lost, found, wandering, injured or dead animals
Dead animal removal
Loddon Shire Council is responsible for removing dead animals from local roads and public areas. Please report them to the Local Laws Department by phoning (03) 5494 1200.
Wildlife - native
Injured or orphaned native animals such as kangaroos, possums, lizards and snakes etc. on roads or in public areas should be reported to the Wildlife Rescue and Emergency Service
website or (0427) 301 401.
Livestock on roads
Livestock on roads represent a significant danger to motorists.
Vic Roads is the responsible authority for livestock on all highways and main arterial roads throughout the shire (Vic Roads A, B and C signed roads). Council is responsible for livestock on local roads.
Any loose or wandering livestock should be reported immediately. Contact Vic Roads call centre on 131 170 for highways and arterial roads, or for local roads contact Council on 5494 1200.
Please ensure you can provide accurate directions to the location of the livestock.
Owners of livestock should take care to ensure that fencing is properly maintained.
Lost and Found Animals
If you have lost or found an animal, please contact the Local Laws Department for assistance by phone (03) 5494 1200.
Animals found to be wandering within the municipality will be impounded and cared for by Local Laws staff in Council’s pound. Animals are kept and disposed of in accordance with the Impounding of Livestock Act 1994.
Impounding fees, charges for the care of animals and fines may apply when collecting an animal from the pound.
